Hand and words are not for hurting pledge

At the beginning of every school year I go around to each classroom and do the "hands and words are not for hurting" pledge with students. We talk about what it means to be kind with our words and our bodies not only toward others but toward ourselves as well.  Students then trace their hand on purple paper, write their name on it and the hand gets taped to a giant heart in the classroom as a reminder that they took the pledge.  A second hand is traced and taken home as a reminder to do the same at home and in the community. On Monday mornings when Mr. Bertholf gets on the intercom to do announcement, students take the pledge as a weekly reminder to be safe and kind.

The pledge:

"I will not use my hands or my words for hurting myself or others"
